First week, fourth time

Ok, so I’ve had more than a week worth of classes. Classes haven’t been all that bad, except for how they got scheduled on Wednesdays. I’ve got 6 hours of lab straight through, and two additional hours of lecture. It’s worth it, though, since I’m done at 10:30 am on Fridays.

I’ve got three ECET courses this semester, which I will never be able to keep straight. So here’s my best guess as to what we’re doing in each one.

In ECET 231 we’re studying electrical and power controls, so far, however, we’ve only been discussing the same stuff that we learned near the end of the semester in ECET 207. The labs for that course don’t seem to be too involved either. For example, for our first lab we toured the power/utility plant here at Purdue.

ECET 257 will cover RF and power electronics. This should be a lot of fun. We’ve already learned the basic concept of how an FM radio works. The labs in there seem to be very tedious, as are the required lab reports. I guess that’s good though, so we know what will be expected of us once we get jobs in our field.

ECET 297 is the projects course. We get to design and build a digital volt meter. This should be interesting, since we have to handle all of that ourself. We have to find the right resources to help us design the circuit, then we have to have the circuit board printed, order the parts, assemble it, test it, and, if it doesn’t work, make it work. I’m really looking forward to those labs.

I’m also taking two non ECET courses, history and music theory. Music theory is exactly like what I took in high school, so that should be easy enough. History, specifically introduction to the modern world, is going to be tough. It’s basically history of western civilization from 1300. There’s not really a lot of memorization required, fortunately, but the tests are all essay questions. That’s what’s going to get me, I just can’t do those for history.

Well, I’ve got to get to my second lab of the day, but I’ve got everything in here that I need. Keep checking back to see just how frustrated I get with my digital volt meter, and history class, and what other nifty technology that were learning about in my other courses.
